Why Take a 10-Hour Bus from Singapore to Penang?

Penang Street Art - Boy on Bike

People questioned me why suffer a 10-hour bus ride from Singapore to Penang when you could take a flight for about the same price and a lot less time.

For me, I try to avoid budget airlines and airport security clearance when there are other options. The last time I checked, the cheapest air ticket from Singapore to Penang includes a stop at Kuala Lumpur. That means wasting time disembarking and embarking at the stopover airport, in additional to the 1-2 hours of check-in and waiting before boarding time, which add up to the total travel time. And if you're unlucky like some of my friends, the connecting flight was delayed and the checked baggage did not arrive until the next day.

Personally, I prefer taking the bus to Penang and I don't mind clearing custom at the Second Link. So, instead of wasting time at the airport, I'll book the overnight express bus to save on accommodation cost and start the day early at my destination.

The seats on the Singapore to Penang express bus are spacious and very comfortable if you picked the right bus company. Go read travel blogs that share express bus travel experience and figure out which bus ticket to buy.

As for me, I'd travelled by Sri Maju express bus from Golden Mile Complex to Sungai Nibong recently and was quite satisfied with their service.

Booking a bus trip from Singapore to Malacca

Received an email from a visitor to the website, MyExpressBus.com , commenting of the difficulty in booking bus tickets from Singapore to Malacca via the phone or Internet. I can understand how frustrated she felt when the express bus companies in Singapore did not want to accept credit card booking via phone. These bus companies are still relying on the good old method of cash payment. So if you want to pre-book your tickets, you will have to make an additional trip personally to their ticketing office. Otherwise, go to the bus terminal and risk not getting a seat. As for online booking via the Internet, the company that has such service only ply the Singapore-KL and Singapore-Petaling Jaya route at the moment. Go check www.aeroline.com.sg for latest service route. Singapore may boast to have world class land transportation - but within the island. It is time for the Singapore Tourism Board to look in modernising our outbound bus services.

Express Bus from Penang to Kuala Lumpur

There are many express bus companies that operate the Sungai Nibong Bus Terminal, Penang to Kuala Lumpur route, however, not many express buses depart from Georgetown. If I were to take the express bus from Sungai Nibong, I would have to incur additional cost and time. Eventually, I found a bus travel company that picked up passengers at Komtar, located about 5-minute taxi ride from my hotel. The pick-up point is at street level and a short distance from Maybank Komtar. See the location map below. I booked the Penang to Kuala Lumpur bus ticket from New Asian Travel (aka Newsia Express) . The one-way bus ticket from Komtar to TBS costed MYR38. The express bus was a 27-seater KPB Signature Class. The seats were spacious and interior was clean and tidy because no food and drink were allowed onboard. After departing from Komtar, the bus made a stop at Sungei Nibong to pick up other passengers before proceeding to Kuala Lumpur (Terminal Bersepadu Selatan). The entire journe...
